Star Trek: Lower Decks (2020-present) has dropped another trailer for its Season 2 release. With a premiere date of August 12, 2021, the coming season looks to be hit with another 10 episodes.

The trailer is full of references to other Star Trek series, and yet, Lower Decks has proven itself to be enjoyable by both new and old fans. Lower Decks follows the lesser-known, lower-ranking crew of the starship U.S.S. Cerritos. This crew is often tasked with the undesirable jobs such as cleanup. The U.S.S. Cerritos is certainly no Enterprise – the missions barely a footnote in the history of Starfleet – yet the characters are unforgettable. Ensign Mariner (Tawny Newsome) is the rebel and local troublemaker who hates leadership. Ensign Boimler (Jack Quaid) wants so badly to rise in the ranks and work with his Starfleet idols but can’t seem to avoid messing up. Ensign Tendi (Noël Wells) is the newly-arrived Orion genius with a heart of gold. Ensign Rutherford (Eugene Cordero) is a new cyborg trying to find his place amongst Starfleet’s various career paths. The cast makes up for a wonderfully diverse crew, and it is a joy to watch them maneuver the many adventures of the Star Trek universe.

Though the trailer itself is vague for season spoilers, it does reveal some of the new and exciting things we will see this season. Perhaps one of the biggest highlights in the trailer is the Tom Paris plate. It is not often that characters outside of the original series or The Next Generation have gotten a shoutout or cameo, so it’s a pleasant surprise to see Voyager’s pilot get commemorated with a collectable platen – one that Boimler clearly looks to for guidance in his Starfleet career. Of course, within hours of the trailer dropping, it was revealed the Tom Paris plate will soon be made available for purchase for a limited time.

The Tom Paris plate we’ve always wanted

Lower Decks has proven itself able to take on both new and old Trek continuity with ease. Now with Tom Paris on board in the Lower Decks universe, it’s exciting to keep guessing who will be showing up this season – whether returning alien species or characters we all know and love. What are you hoping to see this season?
