A. Lee Martinez is one of my favorite authors. Focusing on humorous speculative fiction, his books are a delight to read. Like potato chips or tattoos, you can’t have just one; you want to read the next one and the next one.

The Constance Verity series is an excellent example of Martinez’s talent at making a story that is outlandish yet grounded. The titular character has been saving the world since birth. With it comes a lot of fame and adventure, but now Constance is wondering what she’s missed by not having a normal life. What is it like to have a 9-to-5 job, a boyfriend who isn’t an international ninja/spy, a night out that doesn’t end in abduction by terrorists or alien invasion? It’s hard to make long-term choices about your life when you’re the Chosen One. So Constance decides she’s going to go on one last adventure to end them all, literally.

According to Variety, Constance Verity will star Awkwafina, fresh off the success of Crazy Rich Asians (2018) and Ocean’s Eight (2018). The script has been written by John Raffo (The Relic, Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story). No director has yet been announced by the studio, Legendary Entertainment.

The Last Adventure of Constance Verity is the first book in the series, followed by Constance Verity Saves the World (read my review for it here; be forewarned, it contains spoilers for the first book), and a third book that Martinez is currently writing. Here’s hoping that we get film versions of all three and that this is just a beginning of the Martinez-verse!
