Review by Josh Rose

Stories about post-apocalyptic worlds are common in the world of comics. What’s less common is an all-ages comic about a post-apocalyptic Canada that is obsessed with hockey. Hockeypocalypse: Cult of Hockey takes readers into the wastelands of Canada, specifically Edmonton, Alberta and into British Columbia, where the Atomics are looking for new resources and defending their home from being plundered. This is the fourth volume in the Hockeypocalypse series, but no prior experience is necessary.

The creator Jeff Martin is a comic creator from Edmonton, Alberta. Martin writes and provides the art for Hockeypocalypse: Cult of Hockey. He has also worked on series like Where is Zog? and Redcoats-ish 2

From the Campaign:

In post-apocalyptic Canada, guns don’t kill – slapshots do.

For the mutated tribes trying to survive nuclear winter – which is like a normal Canadian winter, just more radioactive – hockey serves as a form of ritual warfare in which communities gamble their resources on the abilities of their squad to score goals and bust heads on the ice.

When the Edmonton Atomics aren’t able to get enough of the supplies they need on a road trip through Southern Alberta, Skully has an idea that will take the team West, across the Rocky Mountains. Skully hopes they’ll find more opponents and more resources in British Columbia.

Back in Edmonton, Lizzy and her teammates on the Atomics’ second line find themselves under siege – their rivals have found out the first line is gone and flood into town hoping to take advantage of the back-ups. Can the second line withstand the grind, or will the Atomics return to a community stripped clean of its resources?

Will the Atomic’s return at all? After discovering Ogopogo, and the cult of hockey mutants dedicated to keeping the mythical sea serpent fed, sudden death takes on an all new meaning.

Recommendation: Back it!

If you’re looking for an indie comic that embodies the nature of Canadiana, look no further than Hockeypocalypse: Cult of Hockey. A comic about Canada’s favorite pastime is a must read, but more than that its set in a post-apocalyptic setting where people have turned into radioactive monsters. This looks to be a great all-ages story. If you enjoy this, there’s another three volumes worth checking out.
