Fans of the Oscar winning animated film Frozen have taken to Twitter with the hashtag #GiveElsaAGirlfriend to urge the sequel’s writers to make Elsa Disney’s first lesbian princess.

Disney announced in March 2015 that it was developing the sequel for Frozen after it smashed box office records in 2013. #GiveElsaAGirlfriend started with Twitter user Alexis Isabel Moncada who tweeted on April 30 of this year: “I hope Disney makes Elsa a lesbian princess imagine how iconic that would be.” And “Dear @Disney, #GiveElsaAGirlfriend.”

Moncada is the founder of a site called Feminist Culture and has written there:

“Growing up, I never saw a princess fall in love with another princess and neither have girls growing up right now. The entertainment industry has given us girls who have fallen in love with beasts, ogres who fall for humans, and even grown women who love bees. But we’ve never been able to see the purity of a queer relationship.”

The viral campaign has become big news though with people tweeting Disney and even the voice actors who provide the voices for Frozen’s characters. There has been a lot of support for the idea but also a lot of conservative backlash. It’s 2016, can’t they just let it go?

I read, I write, I play videogames, Ghostbusters is my favourite thing in the known universe, but quasars come in at a close second. I've been known to cry at the drop of a hat over happy and sad things alike. I've also been known to fly into a rage if things don't go my way, leading to many a fight in high school and breaking someone's nose on the TTC one time. I'm an anxious introvert but also a loud-mouthed bad influence. Especially on my cat. He learned it from watching me, okay!
