Don’t Hug Me I’m Scared: The Series (Youtube) (Vimeo)

If you’ve never seen the terrifying, yet extraordinary phenomenon that is Don’t Hug Me I’m Scared. Let me tell you about it really quick. Don’t Hug Me I’m Scared is a webseries from Becky Sloan and Joseph Pelling. The stars of this series are three puppets as they learn “lessons” in musical form. They learn these lessons by talking objects around them as they teach them about the world. It has everything you’d ever see in a kids show: spectacular sets, amazing music, every sarcastic undertone you can think of, etc. This show has been compared to Sesame Street. If Sesame Street was around the corner of all the terrible things you think about at night.

When I tell you this show is terrifying, I absolutely mean it. It’s very nightmarish in its appearance, but the songs will get stuck in your head overtime. The songs are the absolute highlight of the show honestly. It’s riddled with an insane of amount of “what the hell” and knowledge mixed together. In the episode, TIME (E2), this becomes very apparent in its knowledge because it’s taking you through the journey and wonders (and downfalls) of time itself. The show starts off very soft and sweet, teaching you lessons that you might already know about like love, time, creativity, dreams. However, when the climax of the show hits you, it really hits you. It’s a visionary and frightening turn of events and it’ll leave you saying, “what the fuck” every single time. There’s nothing like this show and it’s amazing.

They haven’t stopped expanding the DHMIS brand either. There’s merch based off the characters. There was also a Kickstarter to expand DHMIS, which successfully hit its goal and gave six new episodes! Right now, it seems the show has hit it’s goal, but hopefully there will be more life lessons to learn from this amazingly terrifying nightmare of a webseries!
