Is Superman Circumcised? is a great book for anyone interested in Superman and the intersection of history and folklore.
This week we discuss that Jim Lee interview, all those SubStack defections, The Suicide Squad, and, of course, comics.
2016 saw the release of what some may call (me!) one of the worst modern superhero films, Suicide Squad. So color me and everyone else surprised when Warner Bros. announced The Suicide Squad (2021) in 2018. Less of a sequel and more of a do-over, The Suicide Squad has one key difference from its predecessor: it’s written and directed by James Gunn, the man responsible for turning the Guardians of the Galaxy into a household name.
Led by the mysterious figure known only as The King, a ragtag team consisting of Green Arrow, Lois Lane, Talia al Ghul, Steve Trevor, The Question, Manhunter, and Director Bones seek to reestablish Checkmate and take down Leviathan.
This last volume of Ostrander’s Suicide Squad collects issues #59-#66. Between Superman breathing down their necks and a trek through a nightmarish jungle, the stakes are appropriately high for the Squad.
Volume seven of Suicide Squad collects issues #50-#58. It’s the penultimate chapter in this series, so there are tons of fun callbacks to earlier issues. In fact, we get the return of the original Squad members from Suicide Squad #1.
Locke & Key/Sandman: Hell and Gone #1 is every bit the amazing crossover event that you’d expect from two of comics’ finest universes. Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez have set up a story that perfectly blends the worlds of many beloved characters. In short, it’s the stuff that dreams are made of.
Warner Bros. has officially dropped the trailer for their next DC Comics film, The Suicide Squad (2021). Written and directed by James Gunn and co-written by the original Suicide Squad comicbook writer John Ostrander, The Suicide Squad looks exactly as I expected it to from the man who directed Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) and 2010’s Super starring Rainn Wilson. So without further ado, let’s dive in.
