Thanks for joining us for September’s Rogues Portal Book Club Chat! I’m always so excited to see what other people have to say about each book, and this time y’all knocked it out of the park. Here’s this month’s wrap up for Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban!
First we started with a poll:
Welcome to your 3rd year @ Hogwarts! What elective are you most excited to start? #RPBookClub
— Rogues Portal (@RoguesPortal) September 25, 2017
Looks like most of you are excited to start Care and Keeping of Magical Creatures! Just don’t feed your flobberworms too much lettuce!
Then we talked about Harry’s summer with the Dursleys…
my darling ?? #RPBookClub pic.twitter.com/OPNoVqeY7i
— Elizabeth (@semisweetrubix) September 25, 2017
#RPBOOKCLUB I was so happy when he walked out. I felt happy for him, but also worries. More happy than worried. Abuse fucks you up.
— Gentlemen Worlock (@RobertCoffil) September 25, 2017
…and how Fudge treated Harry’s use of underage magic.
A2 OOOH! Probably to some extent, however he’s still playing politics – can’t expel everyone’s favorite boy wizard #RPBookClub https://t.co/C8X6k5UB0R
— dread reed ?? (@armustdie) September 25, 2017
just wait 2 more books for when it’s politically viable, Fudge!!!! lol #RPBookClub
— dread reed ?? (@armustdie) September 25, 2017
Then we asked about the dementors’ presence at Hogwarts.
Reminds me of cops in real schools. Accustoms kids 2 militarized learning environment, makes the gov overt, threatening presence #RPBookClub https://t.co/XTJJSUQd1b
— (((Laura Muth))) (@LauraMuth1) September 25, 2017
Plus the whole thing about invisibility cloaks, disguises, etc. could also be metaphor for the surveillance state #RPBookClub
— (((Laura Muth))) (@LauraMuth1) September 25, 2017
This is the second time we’ve seen professors at Hogwarts claim to be more than they are. Is there a difference between how we see Trewlawney and Lockhart?
#RPBOOKCLUB Lockhart is a liar and a swinder T- never seemed that bad to me.
— Gentlemen Worlock (@RobertCoffil) September 25, 2017
Trelawney is also trying to live up to her family name!!!!! Lockhart is just power and fame hungry. #RPBookClub
— Samantha Pearson ? (@theverbalthing) September 25, 2017
There seems to be a consensus that there ought to be stricter hiring practices at Hogwarts.
A5 GOD NO he has the raw materials to be a good teacher but, he should be co-teaching with someone like Grubbly Plank #RPBookClub https://t.co/nS5YVviWuo
— dread reed ?? (@armustdie) September 25, 2017
#RPBookClub ❤️ Hagrid; he’s a good empath, a good friend, good with magical creatures, but a good pedagogue he is not.
— Erin E. Barrio (@erin_barrio) September 25, 2017
Did Lupin have a responsibility to teach all his students how to cast a Patronus? Or is it too much to expect young students such advanced magic?
A6 but could he have offered an optional club or seminar? YES and he should have #RPBookClub
— dread reed ?? (@armustdie) September 25, 2017
Could he? He’d have to use a real dementor. The Magic only seems to work in their presence. Is this a plot hole? #RPBookClub
— Samantha Pearson ? (@theverbalthing) September 25, 2017
Can I get a fact check to the floor?
yes!!!! he does and it’s awesome #RPBookClub
— dread reed ?? (@armustdie) September 25, 2017
this is true!!! and wait doesn’t harry just teach them how to cast patronuses anyway w/out a boggart?! #RPBookClub
— dread reed ?? (@armustdie) September 25, 2017
??
— Elizabeth (@semisweetrubix) September 25, 2017
Please don’t let our extensive knowledge of Harry Potter trivia shame you from the discussion! Let’s go to Hogsmeade to make up.
#RPBookClub you’ll find me at Honeydukes! #allhandsondeckgranger pic.twitter.com/hY3chHSi9K
— Erin E. Barrio (@erin_barrio) September 25, 2017
weird to think that 13 year old kids were drinking butterbeer, though!!!! with auto-refill tankards! #RPBookClub
— dread reed ?? (@armustdie) September 25, 2017
#RPBOOKCLUB I just thought they were european and didn’t get schawested because they have self control. Go figure. I need to reevaluate.
— Gentlemen Worlock (@RobertCoffil) September 25, 2017
Lupin explains why he didn’t talk about the Marauders being Anamagi, but why didn’t he tell anyone about the map?
A8 Honestly? I don’t think Lupin is great at adulting. He’s still got a student mindset- keep secrets from the adults, don’t get in trouble.
— Jamey Hampton ?? (@jameybash) September 25, 2017
Plus, again, WEREWOLF. Keeping secrets is Lupin’s whole life. My babe. #RPBookClub
— Samantha Pearson ? (@theverbalthing) September 25, 2017
Perhaps, but with HP’s life on line at the time and, of course, that he din’t reveal that Sirius was an animagus, it is a bit of a plothole
— Queer_Trek (@Queer_Trek) September 25, 2017
#RPBookClub This is the most relatable thing about Lupin imho. His friend might have been a mass murder but at one point he was kind
— Elizabeth (@semisweetrubix) September 25, 2017
You are in the possession of a timeturner: what are you going to do with it?
#RPBOOKCLUB I’m not the same person I was when I was in college. I would go back and probably choose a different school.
— Gentlemen Worlock (@RobertCoffil) September 25, 2017
how far back can I go?? because i’d be happy to literally bend the space time continuum in order to come out at 15 instead of 23 #RPBookClub
— Jamey Hampton ?? (@jameybash) September 25, 2017
Y’all are so responsible. Then there’s me and Reed.
Hermione needs to improve her sleep schedule. TAKE NAPS BB #RPBookClub
— Elizabeth (@semisweetrubix) September 25, 2017
Maybe it’s good I can’t time travel.
In Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, we saw how Hagrid was sent to Azkaban without a trial. Again, in this book, we saw Sirius (and Buckbeak!) punished without trial.
Hagrid and Sirius both go to Azkaban without a trial. What does that say?
#RPBOOKCLUB doesn’t seem to be something that goes through a whole lot of court proceedings. The arachic nature of their society means you
— Gentlemen Worlock (@RobertCoffil) September 25, 2017
A10 furthermore, both Hagrid and Sirius are profiled –Hagrid, because of his race, Sirius because of his family #RPBookClub
— dread reed ?? (@armustdie) September 25, 2017
(also i feel like this is pretty much how our actual ~justice system works)
— charlotte geater (@tambourine) September 25, 2017
Last question! What was your favorite part of the book?
“he thought he saw his father but he saw HIMSELF” is maybe my most treasured moment in ANY book. just as special to me now as when i was 11.
— Jamey Hampton ?? (@jameybash) September 25, 2017
A11 I’m shipper trash, but that moment when Remus and Sirius embrace makes me want to die. #RPBookClub https://t.co/FpxyYrNIqb
— Samantha Pearson ? (@theverbalthing) September 25, 2017
Of course, we can’t all be in love.
#RPBOOKCLUB can’t even lie, this was the slowest HP book for me. 300 pages until it got interesting. Fav moment, was when it was over.
— Gentlemen Worlock (@RobertCoffil) September 25, 2017
