What If Minnie Mouse Became Captain Marvel #1 cover Mickey’s best gal becomes something else —and something marvel-ous— in What If Minnie Mouse Became Captain Marvel #1.

The latest in a line of What If comics mashing up classic Disney characters with Marvel heroes, What If Minnie Mouse Became Captain Marvel #1 is exactly what it says on the tin: what if Minnie Mouse were an ambitious journalist who, unbeknownst to herself, had a super alter ego? If Minnie is gonna be any of those characters, their premier female hero is probably the best option. (Ignoring the fact, of course, that she will also be the Invisible Woman in another one of these soon.)

Mirroring the actual origin story of Carol Danvers in 616 continuity, this one-shot is fairly beat-for-beat with the earliest Ms. Marvel comics — and that’s maybe the biggest critique you could have for this issue, or any of the Disney/Marvel What If crossovers thus far. All of the ones I’ve read don’t really take their concepts anywhere interesting or “new,” but it depends on what you want out of these. I think this volume of What If, for example, would be great for my  nieces and nephews who perhaps don’t have much knowledge of Marvel lore, but love Mickey, Minnie, et. al. For most adults, especially most Marvel-keen adults, there’s likely not much here for them.

If anything, the creative team —who were also behind What If Donald Duck Became Thor— does a great job of establishing the tone and visual identity of the piece. Writer Luca Barbieri keeps it light, while Giada Perissinotto’s art is fantastic, really delivering the “Disney” aesthetic you would expect, with lovely colors by Lucio Ruvidotti.
