Old Man Logan #35 concludes the brief “Moon Over Madripoor” story arc in what felt like a liberation story for Yuriko. When we concluded last time, Logan was not in a good way, and when I had commented in my last review that the conflict felt a little rushed…surprise! Gorgon’s back on his feet and making life miserable for Yuriko and Logan. However, Yuriko’s had it with the men in her life telling her what to do, and she takes it out on the newly-resurrected Gorgon. After Gorgon’s Hand henchmen spirit him away like a bunch of cowards, Yuriko does what she can with the readily available resources she has to keep Logan from bleeding out. And then we close a few threads, Yuriko gives Logan…something (gee, what could it be?)…and is off to explore life as a woman free of all obligations.
This story, though it may have been a conclusion of the arc started last issue, seemed to open up a whole bunch of different threads to explore at the same time. We have Yuriko’s actions to save Logan (and the mystery box meant for emergencies only) that could definitely have consequences later on, her liberation and unclear alignment, and a pissed off Gorgon who will almost certainly want to get back at everyone involved.
The art in Old Man Logan #35 was nice and gritty, as gory as it was in the previous issue, and the color shades throughout different scenes definitely set the right tone. I enjoyed the Gorgon/Yuriko movie-cover stare down. Also, I don’t know why I didn’t notice this last time, but the Scarlet Samurai outfit is pretty rad. Hopefully she shows up again in the future.
Verdict: Buy it.
Like I said, Old Man Logan #35 introduces lots of open story threads that will hopefully be explored later on…probably the most pressing being Logan’s mystery box. Also, someone buy the poor guy a beer!
