[LIST] LGBT CHARACTERS AND COUPLES IN MOVIES, TV, AND COMICS

Happy Pride Month! With the coronavirus still around, we may not be able to go to parades, but that doesn’t make this month less important. In fact, the parades are just a small part of it. What is really important is celebrating diversity. Popular media is slowly starting to become more comfortable with having LGBT+ characters (took them long enough), so let us celebrate Pride Month by listing a couple awesome LGBT+ characters in movies, TV, and comics!

Nico Minoru, Karolina Dean & Xavin (Marvel)

In the Runaways comics, Karolina Dean is in a relationship with genderfluid Xavin. While Xavin also appeared in the Hulu adaption, it was Nico that was in a relationship with Karolina instead.

Oberyn Martell (Game of Thrones)

The Red Viper of Dorne was known for many things, one of which was his fluid sexuality. He was shown to share the bed with female and male lovers, and he wasn’t trying to hide it.

Kelly & Yorkie from Black Mirror’s “San Junipero”

Black Mirror is known for its intriguing stories around technology, but, in this episode in particular, the focus was more on this cute couple than on the technology that brought them together.

America Chavez (Marvel)

Miss America Chavez was created by Gabby Rivera, Joe Casey, and Nick Dragotta in 2011. Since then, she has been blowing everyone’s mind with her set of powers. While she did date a guy for a while, she eventually came out as a lesbian in Young Avengers Vol 2 #15.

Catwoman (DC)

Created by Bill Finger and Bob Crane, Selina Kyle (aka Catwoman) has always been known as Batman’s (and Bruce Wayne’s) love interest throughout the years. However, in 2015, Catwoman came out as bisexual in Catwoman #39, where writer Genevieve Valentine has Selina kiss Eiko Hasigawa, a woman currently occupying the Catwoman persona.

Loki (Marvel)

While there have been only hints towards Loki’s LGBT+ member card in the movies, in the comics, this popular Marvel villain is both pansexual and genderfluid.

Klaus Hargreeves (Netflix/Dark Horse)

In 2019, Netflix released the live-action adaption of the Dark Horse comic The Umbrella Academy. While Klaus was in a relationship with a man on the TV show, he is actually pansexual. This was confirmed by the actor playing Klaus (Robert Sheehan).

Theo Putnam (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina)

During the course of the TV show, Susie Putnam changed his name to Theo and came out as transgender. In the recent season, he also got a boyfriend, confirming him as not-straight.

Lenny Busker (Legion)

Lenore “Lenny” Busker is David Haller’s best friend in Legion (named after David Haller’s comic nickname Legion). While Lenny doesn’t appear in the comics, she was a prominent character throughout the show. From the beginning, she was portrayed as a lesbian and was seen being involved with various women, though one in particular stuck with her.

Korra & Asami (Nickelodeon)

While the animated series only showed hints of Korra’s attraction to Assami, it has been confirmed that Korra is bisexual and is romantically involved with Asami. This makes her one of the few LGBT+ heroes of Nickelodeon.

Harley Quinn & Poison Ivy (DC)

While Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy have been good friends for a long time, most fans know that they’re more than that. In an alternate timeline, they even got married, and recent comics and other media in which they appeared have more or less confirmed their romance.

Oswald Cobblepot (Gotham)

From the get go, Oswald Cobblepot, also known as the Penguin, was seemingly uninterested in the women around him. This was later explained when he confessed his love to Edward Nygma, also known as the Riddler. In the comics, the two have a very close friendship, which some argue to be more than just a friendship. Gotham did confirm that there was more going on, even though Ed sadly rejected Oswald. The actor playing Oswald, Robin Lord Taylor, is a gay man as well.

Pretty much all of Sense8’s main characters

Sense8 is a complicated show to explain, but there is one phrase that does come to mind: infinite love. This show has a gay couple, a lesbian couple where one woman is transgender (and the actress is as well!), and it has a couple orgies where gender is not an issue. The LGBT+ representation is high, and the show proves that love is love.

Captain Jack Harkness (Tochwood, Doctor Who)

The man, the myth, the legend. He flirts with everyone he sees, no matter their gender. Captain Jack Harkness has made a reputation for himself as the ultimate flirt who doesn’t care if you’re male, female, non-binary, or an alien from galaxies away. He even kissed the Doctor in Doctor Who … and he kissed himself in Torchwood.

Barbara Kean & Tabitha Galavan (Gotham)

These two Gotham girls have proven to be tough cookies who rule with an iron fist. They’ve always been there for each other through thick and thin. While some people wrote them off as best friends, it was clear that there was a lot more going on between the two, especially seeing as they kissed on multiple occasions.

Deadpool (Marvel)

The OG pansexual superhero (or well … anti-hero). Deadpool doesn’t really care what your gender is. If he’s got the hots for you, he will flirt with you. Even though Deadpool has never been seen involved with a man, Deadpool writer Gerry Duggan confirmed Deadpool’s attraction to “anything with a pulse” on Twitter in 2013. Other Deadpool writer Gail Simone tweeted in 2015 that she “always thought of Deadpool as pansexual.”

Elena & Syd (One Day At A Time)

This comedy show tackles various important subjects, such as racism, mental health, and LGBT+ matters. One of the main characters, Elena, came out as a lesbian during the show, and she ended up in a relationship with the non-binary Syd.

Clarke Griffin (The 100)

As one of the main characters of The 100, Clarke Griffin has shown great character development in which she proved to be a strong leader. Clarke has been in relationships with both men and women, and she was confirmed to be bisexual when she started dating Lexa. Clarke isn’t the only LGBT+ character in the show, as there is also a gay couple.

Ambrose & Zelda Spellman (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina)

While it was clear from the get-go that Ambrose Spellman is pansexual (considering his relationship with Luke and later with Prudence), his aunt Zelda was only revealed to be into women at the end of the third season.

Robin Buckley (Stranger Things)

Everyone thought this new character would end up being in a relationship with Steve. Instead, Robin rejected Steve by coming out as a lesbian. Luckily, Steve didn’t take it to heart and became very supportive. It’s what we like to see!

Negasonic Teenage Warhead & Yukio (Deadpool 2)

In the second Deadpool movie, Negasonic Teenage Warhead surprised everyone by having a pink-haired girlfriend named Yukio, who is pretty much the complete opposite of the punk lady. However, they are an adorable couple and Deadpool is probably their number one fan.

So there you have it! I’m happy to say that there are many more LGBT+ characters that didn’t make the list, because that means the list is getting longer and longer, and that’s just what we need. Happy Pride Month to everyone!
