With Pixar’s newest movie Finding Dory (a sequel to 2003s Finding Nemo) just over two months away, Pixar has released a single shot of the short film that will premiere before the film. You know, just in case you needed more motivation to go and see a Pixar film!
The six-minute silent short, titled Piper, will be about a baby sandpiper bird learning to overcome her fear of the water. Inspiration for the short came when veteran Pixar animator Alan Barillaro noticed the thousands of birds on the beach that would run from the water but ran back between waves to eat.
Barillaro has commented on his inspiration:
“It’s always fun to show a world we’re familiar with but from a different perspective… Have we ever viewed water from just an inch off the sand?”
Three years of storyboards, research and development, production, and getting King Crimson singer Adrian Belew to score the short, and Piper has landed the spot before Finding Dory, which hits theatres June 17!
