Bloodshot #1 is an action-packed comic featuring one of the most deadly super soldiers in Valiant Comics. Bloodshot works to stop a paramilitary group from targeting refugees. Before they can bomb a truck filled with food and water, Bloodshot begins a violent conflict with the goal of bringing the food and water to the people who need it. And it’s just one massive explosion after another.

Tim Seeley does an amazing job setting the stage. Right off the bat, he gives us a hook that isn’t fulfilled until the very end of the issue. Bloodshot is put on full display, showing off a wide range of abilities, and one of the characters even gives readers a brief history to who Bloodshot is. Seeley introduces readers to new antagonists, known as the Black Bar, who recognize the good Bloodshot is doing but believe he is a greater danger than a help to society.

Brett Booth is the perfect artist to work on Bloodshot #1. He is able to precisely capture the high-adrenaline pace of the story and give it the physicality it needs to be a great action comic. I’m not crazy about some of the character designs, however. It feels like these characters were brought straight out of the ’90s with their pouches, thigh holsters, and mouth masks. Even the armor lends to this look. Though I do appreciate how they sneaked in an homage image to the cover of Bloodshot #1 from the early ’90s.

Andrew Dalhouse uses all the colors you’d expect to see in an action flick: blues and grays for the night scenes, reds and yellows for fire and explosions. But sometimes, those colors dominate their panels. Dalhouse seems to use different colors to show a change in setting or to highlight an action.

Looking for a new action-packed book with lots of explosions? Bloodshot #1 is the perfect place for new readers to jump on and check out the White Ghost. Full of great art, I’m very curious to see how things will turn out with Bloodshot’s new antagonists.
