A review by Greg Brothers
If you are a fan of the X-men then you have heard it a ton of rumors over the last few years, everything from they are going to kill off all the X-Men to they will be split up into separate teams never to be seen from again. Well rest easy X-men fans as the Marvel Universe has decided to bring the team back out of the shadows and are promising a return to the glory days of the X-men.
X-Men Prime #1 starts out with kitty pride getting used to being back on Earth and trying to just lead a normal life. Of course, within just a few short panels Kitty is visited by Storm, who is coming to Kitty about rejoining the team. Although still not sure if she wants to rejoin the X-Men kitty agrees to visit the school. As she wanders the halls she is reminded of the past while also remembering how different things are now. Before long old friendships are rekindled and new bonds are starting to form, all while Kitty makes a decision that will have a major effect on her and the X-men moving forward.
X-Men Prime #1 begins to set up the future of the X-Men franchises perfectly. With the fears of death from the terregin mists behind them the X-Men can refocus and reestablish their goals and motivations. Prime sets up the future of several of the teams and reestablishes the status quo moving forward. By looking at the school through Kitty’s eyes we are reminded of what she once was and how she has grown and changed over time. I also enjoy that the time displaced original five are back to working together and are ready to break out on their own. Away from the mansion we find out a bit about where the Weapon X comic is headed as a new threat is hunting down mutant assassins and forming a team.
The art throughout the book is bright, bold and exciting. The characters while having some updated looks are easily recognizable. The is a nice bit of panels that focus on the action during the Weapon X set up but overall the team of artist do an excellent job of adding excitement and intrigue to the panels filled with dialogue.
The Verdict
Buy it! X-Men Prime #1 is the reboot of the franchise that I have been wanting for years. All the characters feel like themselves and you are reminded through their interactions more than anything X-Men are all family. After everything the following quote tells you everything about where the direction the X-men franchise is going, “We’re going to show that world what we are. Not Mutants, Not Freaks, Not Homo-Superior, but Heroes.”
