It Will All Hurt is set in the same post-apocalyptic world as Farel Dalrympte’s The Wrenchies (!!). In this series, we follow Alemendra Clementine and a motley crew of adventurers. It’s a tough, dystopian world these kids live in, and there’s an evil wizard. If you like comics with a concise plot, this is not for you. It’s essentially a stream-of-consciousness read.
You move from character to character, from moments of joy to moments of pain, from death to life with the ease of blinking one’s eye. As bleak as the environment is, Dalrympte makes a concentrated effort to zoom-in on moments of wonder and magic. This isn’t a world I’d want to live in, but I’ll definitely be visiting it frequently.
In other words, It Will All Hurt is an experience. The writing is sparse and poetic. The wide gutters and loose, uneven composition make you feel like you’ve been invited into someone’s secret world. Dalrympte’s whimsical, watercolor sketches and varying texture and sound-play highlight his unique talent as a comic creator. And, to top it all off, the story is narrated by a cat: Gato Gris.
Verdict: Buy it.
The surreal survival tale It Will All Hurt is sad but in a satisfying, beautiful way like a good mellow album. This trade paperback collects all three issues of It Will All Hurt, as well as all of the webcomic chapters.
