What We’re Excited For In 2017- Movies & TV

We, at Rogues Portal, love ourselves some pop culture, comics, and everything entertainment. Movies & TV are going to be a very big, big part of 2017. With movies such as, Power Rangers, Star Wars, Spider-Man, Wonder Woman and television like Taboo, Iron Fist, Legion, Game of Thrones, Series of Unfortunate Events and Powerless, who isn’t excited? Some of the team at Rogues Portal would like to tell you what they’re most excited in movies and television for 2017!

There are so many films and television shows that I’m excited about in 2017. I don’t even know where to begin! From animation to live action, there are tons of films that have already taken my fancy and has had me jumping for joy! Here are a few key films I CANNOT wait for!

Lego Batman
Before I wrote this, something amazing happened at work… I ended up serving Will Arnett! He’s currently filming in the Cardiff and came into my workplace. Safe to say, I fangirled a hell of a lot (but like to think I kept some form of dignity). So after that brief encounter I’m definitely looking forward to seeing Lego Batman, not only because it looks absolutely hilarious and cute, but I can actually say to people ‘I’ve served Batman’.

Gintama 
I honestly cannot WAIT for this film to come out. I have been majorly excited about this ever since I found out they were thinking of making a Gintama live action. Gintama is my favourite anime, even though I haven’t completed the whole series (I’m currently on episode 111). I am planning on finishing the anime before watching the film which is going to take FOREVER but it’ll definitely be worth it!

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure
Another amazing anime is being made into a live action and, not only that, it’s being directed by none other than Takashi Miike! If you’ve read any of my previous film articles you would know that I adore Takashi’s work and some of his films are crazy! This is a perfect anime/manga for him to adapt to screen reel.

Hidden Figures
Hidden Figures is a film that every young girl should see. It’s already out in the good ol’ US of A, but it’s not out yet down my end. The acting looks amazing, the cinematography looks beautiful, and also the story is incredibly important and needs to be told. Too many amazing women go unnoticed and have their hard work overshadowed or stolen by men. I hope this will inspire other directors to tell stories of other women who we should all know about!

One Punch Man
One Punch Man is getting a series 2 and I cannot wait! I’ve really missed sensei and his cyborg buddy! I love the manga and it’s amazing how they capture the manga so well in the anime. Hopefully, it’ll be more than 12 episodes. Who knows they might do a full length film!

Archer Dreamland
I just watched the trailer earlier this week and Archer Dreamland looks amazing! I think the next series after this will be it’s last, so I cannot wait to see what happens!!

Taboo
I wrote a little about Taboo in the staff pick of the week; suffice for it to be said that I was interested before the first episode, and afterwards, I am eagerly anticipating the next. The first episode dealt with a lot of rumination on cultural mores and what is normally accepted in society within Tom Hardy’s action. Even though I was caught up in the stream of narrative in the show, Hardy is absolutely mesmerizing as the lead. He has been gone from the media landscape since his time in the Revenant, but now this show serves as a vehicle to push his career into the stratosphere.

Iron Fist
The Netflix Marvel shows have been killing it. They are not perfect, personally I think they suffer from being a bit too drawn out at 13 episodes, but they have served to bring the street level Marvel characters to the forefront in a way that I never imagined. Of the shows coming out this year on Netflix, Iron Fist is the one I am most excited about. Ever since the Brubaker/Fraction comic, I want to see Iron Fist be done in a cool way.

Powerless (NBC)
I enjoy a good superhero movie or TV show. Just about anything that falls under the genre will at least get me to tune in for the first episode to see if it’s any good. Let’s be honest though, many of those superhero shows have the same basic concept. In Powerless, we’ll get to see the other end of the superhero world, and that is the normal people that have to deal with the aftermath of those clashes. With veteran actors such as Vanessa Hudgens and Danny Pudi leading the cast, the hope is that this fresh look into the work of superheroing will lead to many laughs.

24:Legacy
One of the most original concepts on television was 24. Jack Bauer has become a pop culture icon in many circles. By the end of the last series, 24 had started to get a little ridiculous and over the top. With 24:Legacy, it seems that the show is going to return to its roots of smaller threats rather than the over the top storylines from before, as Corey Hawkins plays a troubled military hero who joins the CTU forces.

Spider-Man: Homecoming
When they announced that they would be doing yet another reboot of the Spider-Man franchise I, for one, was not that excited. I was not sure why they felt they needed to do it again and if the public would really even care. Then Marvel made the deal with Sony to where they would have a hand in telling this story and I became a little more curious as to what was going to happen. Then all the news of the casting and the use of Spider-Man in other movies started and I suddenly found myself much more interested in Spider-Man: Homecoming then I thought I would be. It sounds like we are going to get to skip the old origin story and instead get to jump in where Spider-Man has already started his crime fighting career. It seems we will get to see how he starts to deal with the problems that come when you are in high school and you have to hide things from your friends. For being skeptical of this movie from its initial announcement I am now all in.

If you just google the phrase “movies 2017” and scroll through the posters, there are dozens of movies I am excited to see this year. Granted, most of them are remakes, sequels, reboots or something in between. Nevertheless, some have earned a kind of privilege to be just that. By the way, Triple X is not one of them. This movie looks ridiculously awful (Baywatch on the other hand…). But let us talk about three examples of the named categories.

Spider-Man: Homecoming
This is a movie we have waited for over a decade. As a child, I liked Tobey Maguire, but after Andrew Garfield (who did a great job), they became cheesy and just were not the Spider-Man I wanted. With Tom Holland we were introduced to an actor with passion, he has the right age and is someone who can stick around for quite some time. Holland’s Spider-Man could even introduce Miles Morales, maybe?

John Wick: Chapter 2
For me, John Wick was one of the big surprises of 2016. Mostly because of Keanu Reeves. Before I saw the first trailer, I was not quite sure if he could deliver such an intense role anymore. But he proved me wrong and, with the music, the fight choreography, and the overall design of the movie, it was a pleasure seeing him in such a great form. In Chapter 2 he will also be reunited with Laurence Fishburne (if that doesn’t sell you, I don’t know what well).

Star Wars VIII
I have to talk about Star Wars VIII. It will be the last time we see Carrie Fisher perform as Princess, sorry, General Leia, before we have to say goodbye to her. I am a huge Star Wars fan and cannot express enough how much I am looking forward to this movie which dives deeper into this new diverse cast, which was so well introduced in Episode VII.

I want to mention two new shows I’m looking forward to. There are so many shows out there and I am quite satisfied with the lineup I’m following right now (Arrow, Supernatural, TWD, HoC, GoT, etc) – I don’t really need more, but who can deny the big expectations for Star Trek Discovery especially because it is produced by Netflix. I still have some cautious optimistic expectations towards Legion, the X-Men series.

So, let us lean back and enjoy the new movies and TV shows we will be receiving, have some good discussions, and speculate what’s coming next. I want to mention one last thing. I did not bring up any new standalone movies or smaller productions because I like surprises. And to be honest, I do not learn about most of them until a week before release.
