For fans of Maggie Stiefvater’s The Raven Cycle, the day we’ve all been waiting for has apparently arrived. This morning on Twitter, Steifvater revealed (through a retweet) that the best-selling book series is being adapted for television.

YES!

The Raven Cycle series follows Blue Sargent, the daughter of a local psychic in Henrietta, Virginia. Although not psychic herself, Blue has the ability to amplify the abilities of others. Her whole life, she’s known one thing for sure: if she ever kisses her true love, she’ll kill him. It’s this knowledge that makes her enforce a strict no kissing policy, which is complicated when she meets the Raven boys.

Led by the sleeping-Welsh-king-obsessed Richard Gansey III, these four friends attend the local private school when they’re not out searching for ley lines and clues for the location of the centuries-old Glendower. When they meet Blue, the five of them embark on a quest that changes everything.

With four books in the series and a spin-off starring Ronan Lynch in the works, it makes total sense to adapt this story into a TV series rather than a film franchise. TV offers more opportunities for long-form storytelling, which will flesh out the world Stiefvater has created. Hopefully, the show will last for several seasons so that audiences can immerse themselves in all four books. One season per book would make sense, though it would definitely be possible to stretch the show further, given the intricacies of Henrietta and the plot.

According to the tweet, Catherine Hardwicke (“Twilight”, “Thirteen”) has been tapped to executive produce and direct the pilot, which is amazing. Michael London (“The Magicians”, “The Illusionist”) is slated to executive produce through Groundswell Productions.

Already, this show sounds like a dream. The book series is an incredible dive into magical realism, so it will be amazing to see how the show adapts that. With Hardwicke and London signed on, I can’t imagine anything but perfection.
