It’s clobberin’ time for The Thing and The Hulk in the, well, aptly-titled Clobbin’ Time #1.

Clobbin’ Time is exactly what it sounds like it would be from the title. Essentially a rebrand of the classic Marvel Two-In-One title, which featured Ben Grimm teaming up with various characters across the Marvel Universe, each issue of this series will pair the ever-lovin’ Thing up with some iconic heroes —and at least one villain, judging by solicits— for the aforementioned clobberin’.

Clobberin’ Time #1 specifically features Ben and his good pal Bruce Banner being whisked away to a strange alien world, quickly finding themselves responsible for its salvation from impending doom. There’s a broader story being setup in the early pages of this issue that has yet to fully reveal itself, but the strength of Clobberin Time’ seems to be it will mostly serve as a connective tissue between each issue, rather than opting for the truly standalone nature of its Two-In-One predecessor. This isn’t actually the first time they’ve done a serialized team-up series with Thing —the last iteration of 2-In-One followed Ben and Johnny Storm as they searched for their missing family— but it’s never a bad idea to make an anthology feel greater than the sum of its parts with some light serialization.

Writer/artist Steve Skroce’s script is appealing zany and weird, but the real star of Clobberin’ Time #1 are his wacky visuals. Just a few examples for the imagination on display includes an Iron Man/Doctor Doom/Ultron hybrid man wielding (what appears to be) a Mjolnir briefcase, a kaiju I can only describe as a goth Klawf, and an allen race of what are basically mystical shaved Ewoks, there’s a lot to look at here. Bryan Valenza’s colors enhance the vibe further, with each page popping with all sorts of flavor between Skroce’s heavy lines. Clobberin’ Time has a big indie comic sensibility in tone that makes it an incredibly entertaining read, but even if you’re only here for the clobberin’ promised by the title, you’ll likely walk away from it satisfied.
