Quince, a 15-issue digital comic book series with two published so far, tells the story of Lupe, a 15-year old girl who was given superpowers at her quinceañera: “quince” powers, so to speak, which will only last as long as she is fifteen.
In issue #1, Lupe is preparing for her quinceañera, a Hispanic tradition that is essentially an extravagant coming-of-age party for girls. She has excited guests, a gorgeous dress, and a loving family—what could possibly go awry? Well, a typical freak out moments before the event might lead to the realization that you can explode a bathroom, with your mind. This first issue is well-paced, and when Lupe is shown to have superpowers it does not feel totally out of place. There are hints throughout the issue about her not feeling well, and her abuela regularly makes comments that suggest this might have happened to her too.
Issue #2 picks up right where issue #1 left off: the destroyed bathroom. Lupe’s abuela coaches her, helping her to restore the bathroom, once again, with her mind. While Lupe’s quinceañera turns out to be a huge success, she puzzles over whether the bathroom incident was all in her mind or not: is she crazy or does she actually have superpowers? As with issue #1, the comic is moving along at a smart pace, introducing readers to more of Lupe’s world while also propelling the story along.
My initial reaction after finishing issue #2 was that I don’t want this just to be 15 issues! The fun, youthful art, unique point of view, and Latina culture all come together seamlessly. Even with only two issues out so far, I have no trouble saying that Quince is an impressive series. Lupe is a compelling character with a lot of spunk, and she immediately invites you into her world. And, to top it all off, she’s a fangirl at heart, and the series does a great job of subtly drawing attention to the unfortunate lack of diverse superheroes.
The Verdict
Buy it! It’s impossible to meet Lupe and not want to follow her along on her quince adventures! Quince is an affecting, convincing read with the right amount of humor, and it will easily appeal to readers of all ages and backgrounds.
