Mystik U 2Mystik U is basically a story that follows Zatanna’s introduction to her powers then going to university to learn how to use and control it. The narrative starts complicated, showing the end game of the narrative. In this narrative, beyond the beginning, the story concentrates on one arch. The arch closes off, but the reader knows there is more to come from the hint in the prologue. I loved how the narrative seems to be circular over the full storyline giving us hope for closure.

As for the characters, I love how Mystik U provides diverse and awesome characters. Also, despite the short time passing in this issue, you can still see these characters develop. They go from unsure new users of magic to more capable and confident. Although I am sure most of their insecurities will rear their heads again, I am quite happy with how they are now. I a

The design of Mystik U is traditionally done. What caught my attention the most is the amazing use of colors. The biggest draw in the comic is the visual beauty and the use of those colors. The comic manages to fill the page with beautiful views that pull on the imagination strings. It presents a holistic and (dare I say?) magical feel to the narrative. I do have to note that the character designs show teenagers (or early twenties). The characters do not look overly grown or sexualized. Characters that actually look their age!

Mystik U definitely seems like DC’s answer to Harry Potter with their magical characters are going to Hogwarts, but it still has that DC feel to it.

Verdict:
Read it! Although I am usually more convinced by a comic when I have read more than an issue, Mystik U has all the elements that I need to continue being curious about it. The content of this issue was well written and intriguing. The characters experience some development, even if this is just over a short period of time. Also, the existence of diverse people of color makes the experience of reading much more enjoyable for me. Moreover, the art is colorful and the design is clean and beautiful. So, go read it and bask in the awesomeness of this story!

Mystik U is great and has the potential to be amazing!
