Well, there goes any hope I had of not spending all my money this fall.
LEGO Dimensions has finally announced their plans for Series 2! Fans have been waiting somewhat impatiently for news on what new franchises the second series of figures would bring to the already expansive toys-to-life game. LEGO had officially said they had a gameplan for LEGO Dimensions spanning three years, so something had to be coming after the last wave of releases came in May. Rumours have been circulating for months, but no official confirmation has been given before today.
We all knew we had to wait until E3 to see what the second series would bring, but LEGO decided to be good and give us the news just a little bit early.
As you can see from the trailer, some of the biggest franchises involved in Series 2 will by Ghostbusters 2016, Harry Potter, Mission: Impossible and Adventure Time. Not only satisfied with blowing our minds with this trailer, they’ve also released information on which packs we can expect right out of the gate on September 30th.
Ghostbusters Story Pack
The new story pack is based around the 2016 Ghostbusters movie. This is interesting because it’s the first true expansion to the game’s story. The box says you’ll be able to play through the entire movie. So is this just an extended level pack or will it have the fully done cutscenes / crossover elements of the main story mode? The fact that it comes with a new facade for your portal is extremely cool. I only wish it came with Kate McKinnon’s Ghostbuster as the main figure. Then again, I wanted the Ghostbusters Level Pack to come with Egon. Here’s hoping this figure has the same ability as Peter Venkmen to play as all four lady Ghostbusters.
Adventure Time
Adventure Time! Come on, grab your friends! This franchise is actually getting two packs. The first is a Level Pack featuring Finn, the Jakemobile, and the War Elephant. The second is a team pack with Jake and Lumpy Space Princess featuring BMO as a usable object. I didn’t realize I wanted Lumpy Space Princess in the game, but oh my glob I need her right now. The bright, colourful world of Adventure Time will fit perfectly with what LEGO Dimensions is already offering. This is also the franchise that’s been shown off using the Battle Arena mode in the trailer. More on that further down.
Harry Potter
I’m disappointed that Harry Potter is only a Team Pack, much like Scooby-Doo or Jurassic World team packs from last series that don’t include an actual playable level outside of their Adventure World. Then again, we did have two dedicated LEGO Harry Potter games previously, so I understand the decision. I have to imagine Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is getting the Level Pack in this instance. I’ll also keep my eyes open for any Fun Packs in the Harry Potter franchise. I need that Hagrid minifig.
Mission: Impossible
Fun fact: This Level Pack actually features a life-sized Tom Cruise minifig! All kidding aside, this was one of the rumoured franchises to be included in Series 2, and I can see the gadgetry and spy elements working really well in a series of levels where you actually have to work your way through. Maybe this could add more stealth elements to the game?
A-Team
I pity the fool who doesn’t buy this Fun Pack. I mean, it’s Mr. T. It may say BA Baracus, but that’s Mr. T. This is likely to be the only A-Team inclusion in LEGO Dimensions, but honestly, it’s the only one you actually wanted. I assume he’ll have the Fix ability judging by the wrench.
Battle Arenas
The press release also mentions all new Battle Arenas which will add a new mechanic to the game.
All-new Battle Arenas will offer first-to-LEGO videogames competitive split-screen local gameplay for up to four players. LEGO minifigures included in the wave 6 through 9 expansion packs will come with special, golden Toy Tags which unlock a Battle Arena within the Free Play Adventure World of the corresponding entertainment brand. Each Battle Arena has four different gameplay modes and comes with its own traps, special powers and interactive environments that make every battle arena unique.
And So Much More!
And, while these are the only packs which we’ve gotten an actual look at so far, there’s definitely more on the way. Between the trailer and press release, here are the franchises that are mentioned:
- Ghostbusters (2016)
- The Goonies
- Harry Potter
- Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
- Adventure Time
- Lego City Undercover
- Mission: Impossible
- The Lego Batman Movie
- The A-Team
- Sonic The Hedgehog
- Teen Titans Go!
- Knight Rider
- E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial
- The Powerpuff Girls
- Gremlins
- Beetlejuice
Wow. Personally, the idea of playing through some LEGO Dimensions with a team of Beetlejuice, The Powerpuff Girls, Will Arnet’s LEGO Batman, Beast Boy, and E.T. sounds pretty amazing to me.
I just hope my credit card doesn’t have a problem with that.
