Josie and the Pussycats keep getting better and better and this might be the best one yet!
In Josie and the Pussycats #3, the girls make their way to Cancun to perform at Spring Break Summer Smash. While they take up some fun in the sun and performing their latest gig, we see the budding flirtatious relationship brewing between Alan M and Josie. The banter is so cute and they’re practically made for each other, but before anything can happen with that, they have another problem to worry about. The return of Alexandra Cabot. For those who don’t remember, Alexandra is Josie’s frenemy. They have a very weird and strained relationship that hasn’t been dived deep into… until now. As Josie tries to get the guy, she has to take Alexandria down a couple of notches, but learn about herself in return.
This has to be my favorite issue of Josie and the Pussycats so far. We finally get to dive into the frenemy relationship between Josie and Alexandra and it’s one that both shocks you, but helps you understand coming from both sides. The way they both viewed their friendship was enlightening at first, but when you see the pitfalls of it, you can understand how both of them viewed each other in the end. Josie saw their friendship as both helping each other at first. She saw the both of them growing up together and doing things that made them completely inseparable in the end. However, when Josie started to make new friends, things soured between the two girls because Alexandra didn’t have a “puppet” anymore. You wanna believe Josie’s side, you wanna think that’s what happened, but wait… it gets better. There are always two sides to every story.
Once Josie confronts Alexandra about her behavior, she lays down the truth for Josie. She tells Josie that she basically used her and her family to get what she wanted, but when she couldn’t buy her “talent” she left her in the dust. Alexandra tells Josie something about herself that she didn’t understand and that was displayed in the first comic. She uses people for her own personal gain until they’re not useful to her anymore. It becomes a shock to Josie and she tries to rectify it the best way she can with Alexandra.
Marguerite Bennett & Cameron Deordio keep bringing something new to Josie and the Pussycats. I never thought I’d like Alexandra, but I sure as hell do now. The dialogue is witty, truthful, and grounded, and paired up with Aubrey’s stunning art and Kelly’s vibrant colors, it’s very much as charming as the creators make it to be.
What’s fantastic about this comic overall so far is the expansion of this world. The characters are not only expanding, but Marguerite and Cameron are giving you the foundation of the Pussycats inside of this story. They’re episodic and spontaneous, but isn’t that what life really is? Especially being in a rock band? It keeps a very playful nature (Valerie and Melody’s Adventure’s have got to be my favorite by far) and it’s fun and exciting, but gives you something of a life lesson on how to treat people at the end of the day. Being the epic fangirl that I am, it’s absolutely incredible to see things in Josie and the Pussycats I never thought I wanted to know.
The Verdict
Buy it! I always get so excited when Josie and the Pussycats come out and this issue was very much my favorite by far. It gives you a backstory to a long brewing rivalry and grounds itself as well. I saw this all the time, but I’m so excited to see where this takes off to now and how much more we learn about everyone in this story!
