Halloween

It was exciting news when another remake of Halloween was announced. Which seems odd considering the fact that this will be the second reboot of the series and the rightfully skeptical attitude most people have towards remakes of classics. What made this particular incarnation different was the skill behind the scenes. This Halloween was going to be produced by Blumhouse Productions, the current king of quality horror in my opinion, and John Carpenter was going to be involved in an advisory role.

Today we got more news and it’s just as exciting. John Carpenter posted this on his Facebook page:

John Carpenter Halloween News

That’s right. David Gordon Green (Snow AngelsPineapple ExpressJoe) and Danny McBride (The Foot Fist WayPineapple Express, the upcoming Alien: Covenant) will be writing the new film with Green directing it. This is a completely unexpected yet totally interesting choice. McBride and Green are no strangers to strange and unsettling and both have stretched out into various genres but neither have gone full-horror yet.

It’s been a long journey with many starts and stops, but I can honestly say that I’ve never been more excited than by the team that we have assembled for the new Halloween,” said producer Malek Akkad.

The best news though? Sounds like Carpenter is still considering doing the music for the new film. As his recent albums — Lost Themes and Lost Themes II — prove his synth skills are still top notch.

Overall I think this is great news. I think Rob Zombie’s Halloween remake is an interesting failure but his Halloween II is one of the best entries in the series. By choosing a creative team that isn’t known for strictly horror, or horror at all, they’re going in a very different and entirely uncharted direction. If there had to be another Halloween then this is certainly the best way for it to be done.

And honestly, I wouldn’t be opposed to Danny McBride as Dr. Loomis.

Halloween is scheduled to be released in theatres on October 19, 2018.
