Halloween Horror Fest: Day 8-14

Here is post 2 and week 2 of my Halloween horror fest! I’ve decided this month I shall be watching a horror film a night. Week 1 was cram packed with some amazing movies and my second week will deliver some solid work too. Some of these include my favourites as well as international horror and one or two that I haven’t seen before.

8. Shutter
I’ve written a review of this film before so, if you’ve been following me long enough, then you know I LOVE LOVE LOVE this film! Still considered one of the best horrors to come out of Thailand, Shutter will have you jumping and screaming while the ending will stun you to silence, the plot twist at the end is one of the best plot twists EVER! The story begins with Jane and her photographer boyfriend hitting a girl with their car. They then begin to see a shadowy figure haunting the background of Tun (the boyfriend). Concerned that the figure is a vengeful spirit, Jane does some research to find that the girl was named Natre and was in Tun’s class. Jane begins to uncover more secrets about Tun and Tun learns the past will never truly leave you. Amazing film, definitely worth a watch!

9. Julia’s Eyes
Another amazing Spanish horror movie that you all really need to watch! The subtle message sent through this film is thought provoking and the acting is solid throughout. The plot is quite simple. Julia, who is slowly losing her sight, is trying to investigate the mysterious death of her sister. I’m not going to give too much away as the plot is not quite as simple as summarized above, but if I go too in detail then that would give too much away. You’ll just have to check it out yourself!

10. Tomie
This is a new one for me! I have never seen Tomie before but I love the manga and cannot wait to see if the film lives up to expectations. I’ve read a review here and there and everyone says that you will probably not have a clue what’s going on in the plot. Apparently it’s quite confusing but, hey ho, I’m here to be entertained!! The film and manga based on a traumatized young woman who is trying to recover her memories with the help of a psychiatrist. During her hypnosis she repeats the name ‘Tomie’ but is unable to recall where she knows it from.

11. Dead Snow
This Norwegian masterpiece is a zombie film you cannot afford to miss. It does have a sequel but not many of the fans of the original seem to like it. I loved the sequel. It’s one of those ‘so bad it’s good’ films. Both films (in my eyes) are hilarious and gory, a must-see for all you slasher lovers out there. After you see it, you will understand why it’s considered a cult film. The plot centres around a party of eight Norwegian medical students who travel to a remote Arctic mountain for an Easter weekend. After one of their group mysteriously disappears they encounter a strange local who tells them that in the waning days of World War II a battalion of Nazi soldiers disappeared in the nearby woods after the residents turned on them, and their zombified corpses remain lurking in the area. Obviously they don’t believe him, until they begin circling their cabin.

12 The Descent
I watched this when I was about 15/16 years old and I remembered being completely terrified; and what made it worse is that my friend’s cat jumped on my lap! I don’t think I’ve ever moved so fast (little fact about me: I’m completely terrified of cats). This is an excellent British horror film which obviously had a sequel, but it doesn’t live up to the first. To be honest it didn’t even need a sequel. The plot centres around our main protagonist Sarah, who a year after some emotional trauma goes to North Carolina to spend some time exploring the caves with her friends. After descending underground (and getting trapped) the women find strange cave paintings and find evidence of an earlier expedition. They eventually find out that they’re not alone. They find underground predators inhabit the caves, and they have a taste for human flesh.

13. Macabre
I haven’t seen Macabre before, to be honest I haven’t heard of it until recently. This Indonesian horror flick looks like a stylish Saw. It’s been described as the Indonesian answer to Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The plot is based on two newlyweds, Adjie and Astrid, along with their 3 best friends. They’ve decided to have an interstate road trip as a last attempt to reconcile Adjie with his estranged little sister Ladya. They end up being slaughtered one by one by a murderous family. I cannot wait to see this film!

14. The Frighteners
Another film I haven’t seen but cannot wait to watch it! From reading reviews and researching the film, everyone keeps saying that it’s such an underrated film! Once an architect, Frank Bannister now passes himself off as an exorcist of evil spirits. To bolster his facade, he claims his ‘special’ gift is the result of a car accident that killed his wife. But what he doesn’t count on is more people dying in the small town where he lives. As he tries to piece together the supernatural mystery of these killings, he falls in love with the wife of one of the victims and has to deal with a crazy FBI agent. From the cover it looks like a fun film, so I cannot wait to watch it!
