Here is post 3 and week 3 of my Halloween horror fest! I’ve decided this month I shall be watching a horror film a night. Week 1 and 2 were cram packed with some amazing horrors and my second week will deliver some solid work too. Some of these include my favourites as well as international horror and one or two that I haven’t seen before.
15. Tale of Two Sisters
The only reason this film is on the list is the fact that I didn’t understand it. At all. So I need to watch it again, and really concentrate on it from the start until the end. It’s a film that you really need to focus on, and I thought I was taking it all in, clearly I was not, because even now if you ask what the ending was about I wouldn’t be able to answer you. After being institutionalized in a mental hospital, teen Su-mi reunites with her beloved sister Su-yeon and they return to live with their father in their country home. The girls widower father has remarried and the girls are instantly resentful of his new wife. As Su-mi and Su-yeon try to resume their regular lives, strange events plague the house leading to shocking revelations and a shocking conclusion. Just do not get distracted while watching the film.
16. The Babadook
This was a disturbing, terrifying film, but it’s so clever and brilliant at the same time. It’s a story about a troubled widow who discovers that her son is telling the truth about a monster that entered their home through the pages of a children’s book. It’s one of the best psychological films I’ve seen as well and even though there are no jumps and scares, the tension the film creates is enough to put you over the edge. Reason the tension is so high in this film is because there is no music to notify you that something is going to happen. This is a very sad film but the acting is Academy Award winning and the script is intelligent and clever. The actions have more metaphorical meanings than any film I’ve seen. This film doesn’t need to rely on jumpy scares. It plays heavily on the fear we all seem to have, which is our emotions.
17. The Nameless
Claudia and Marc are horrified and heartbroken when their young daughter’s body is found mutilated. Several years later, Claudia gets a call from a young woman who could be her child. Claudia then launches an investigation involving a detective, Massera, and a reporter, Quiroga. Their target — a satanic cult, which may be holding and torturing the girl. This Spanish film is a new one for me so I’m excited to see it. The plot seems slightly dark and the reviews for it have not been what I would describe as great, but I’m more than happy to give it a go. I do have high hopes for this film, I mean, Spain has never let me down when it comes to horror films.
18. Rigor Mortis
Rigor Mortis is a new one for me and the special effects and make up got me intrigued. A suicidal actor (Siu-hou Chin) tries to kill himself in an apartment building inhabited by a vampire hunter, ghosts, and other supernatural beings. Apparently the film pays tribute to the vampire films of the 80s. I haven’t really watched any vampire films ever since the vampire craze with Twilight began. Now it’s died down to nearly nothing (exorcisms are the in thing now), I think I’ll be able to appreciate it for all it’s worth, rather than it being another vampire film. The film was up for an award for it’s special effects as well as best actress, actor, and director. From the trailer the film looks amazing and I cannot wait to watch it!
19. An American Werewolf in London
I fell in love with this film the first time I watched it. It’s such a classic and the effects and costumes are just amazing! The music is also well chosen and very upbeat in comparison to the movie itself. Love the fact they used any song that referenced the moon. The effects are dated but still impressive for it’s time and the transformation scene is really impressive! The plot begins with David and Jack, two American college students, who are backpacking through Britain when a large wolf attacks them. David survives with a bite, but Jack is brutally killed. As David heals in the hospital, he’s plagued by violent nightmares of his mutilated friend, who warns David that he is becoming a werewolf. When David discovers the horrible truth, he contemplates committing suicide before the next full moon causes him to transform from man to murderous beast.

20. StageFright: Aquarius
StageFright is another new one for me. I was googling underrated horror movies and this one took my fancy. The story centres around a group of stage actors who lock themselves in the theatre for a rehearsal of their upcoming musical production, unaware that an escaped psychopath is in the theatre with them. Apparently some of the scenes are brutal and gruesome and the music score I’ve heard is pretty solid. The trailer makes it seem like a slasher cliche but I cannot wait to give it a go!
21. Unfriended
At first, this film looked like one of the stupid tween film where it’s just complete rubbish throughout. I automatically thought this film would be awful. This is, without a doubt, one of THE BEST horrors films I’ve seen in terms of tension. Due to the fact that there is no music and since most of the film is done through the idea of being behind a keyboard, there is very little talking. So you hear a lot of typing and nothing else, trust me the film has you at the edge of your seat waiting for something to happen. Also the acting is great, each of the characters are deplorable and are all such vile and hideous creatures to the point where you really do not care what’s going to happen to them. One night, while teenagers Blaire, Mitch, Jess, Adam Ken, and Val take part in an online group chat session, they are suddenly joined by a user known only as “Billie227.” Thinking it’s just a technical glitch, the friends carry on their conversation… until Blaire begins receiving messages from someone claiming to be Laura Barns, a classmate who killed herself exactly one year prior. As Blaire tries to expose Billie’s identity, her friends are forced to confront their darkest secrets and lies.
