Review by Josh Rose
In Eternity #3, Abram and Myshka continue the search for their son in the Unknown. Abram is watching a fight between the two warring factions of the Unknown, contemplating the purpose of it all. From here, Abram flashes back to his childhood, reflecting on who he was and a story he read.
Matt Kindt dives into themes about personality and belief in Eternity #3, expanding on his themes of choice and destiny in the previous issue. Kindt also reveals that somehow Divinity’s powers are based on his personality, which in turn explains why everyone in the Unknown has such varied powers and abilities. But, still the mystery of the murder of the Observer continues! We know a little bit more about how the Observer was killed, but not about who did the deed.
I love how in the first couple panels Trevor Hairsine puts Divinity at the center, surrounded by people fighting. The way he sets up a cinematic zoom as each panel progresses really reinforces the focus. Hairsine uses Abram’s story to create a comparison between a robot and Abram himself. David Baron’s colours continue to reinforce that this is not our world. When the scene changes to Abram’s flashbacks, Baron starts to use browns and yellows instead of purples and pinks.
The Verdict: Buy It.
Eternity #3 continues Abram’s search for his son. Complete with a great fight scene, Kindt also uses the opportunity to set up the conflict for the next issue and solve the mystery of the Observer’s murder. Coupled with some great art, this is a brilliant series that is bound to be one of the great sci-fi stories. It’s clearly influenced by classic pulp science-fiction novels, and it continues the motifs of stories that have been present since the beginning of Divinity.
