Godzilla’s back!

From the studio who birthed our favorite monster, we are now graced with a new studio release of Godzilla, wonderfully titled, Godzilla: Resurgence. Japanese film production and distribution company Toho Studios have been in talks with producing and shooting this project for a long time. This news came after the release of the reboot 2014 release of Godzilla, starring Bryan Cranston, Elizabeth Olsen and Aaron Taylor-Johnson.

Godzilla: Resurgence is the 29th, yes, 29th Godzilla movie in the Toho library. This is the first film in 12 years from Toho since Godzilla: Final Wars. They’ve made a monster of a living off of Godzilla and they will not let this franchise die and they absolutely shouldn’t!

Godzilla in Toho’s movie looks nothing like the Godzilla we’ve come to know. It’s a little bit more frightening with many razor sharp teeth and an attitude to boot. Growing up with Godzilla in my house and being a huge fan, this heavily excites me. I’ve been waiting to see if Toho would come back with another great Godzilla film. This seems like it’s going to be a fun right for the resurgence of the Toho franchise’s Godzilla.

There are no confirmations that the film will be in North America, but it will open in Japan. However, New World Cinema will release the film on DVD in 2017. It’s a bit of a bummer, but hopefully they’ll change their mind on a worldwide release.

The film will be co-directed by Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi, best known for the anime Neon Genesis Evangelion and written by Hideaki Anno.
