Going into the first season of BrainDead, I had no idea what was ahead of me. I thought that BrainDead was going to be about zombies or something and an apocalypse of sorts had claimed the government. I admittedly didn’t think it was a great concept, so I was hesitant to commit to it.
Fortunately I was very wrong. Turns out things like trailers and plot synopsis really help with figuring that sort of stuff in advance. WHO KNEW.
What BrainDead is about is a documentary filmmaker who comes home from LA to work for her brother for 6 months. The brother is a democratic senator in Washington and brings Laurel on to be one of the voices of the people, a constituent case worker. She begins interviewing the constituents and while most of them are full of nonsense, she discovers one that has a mysterious case on her hands… one that is slowly starting to affect all of DC. The more she investigates, the weirder things continue to get.
I honestly enjoyed the crap out of this series. Mary Elizabeth Winstead is always a treat in anything she’s in and this is no exception. In fact, the whole cast is a lot of fun and it’s great to see Tony Shalhoub in a quirky show like this.
Unsurprisingly, BrainDead will not return to CBS for a second season. I’m not saying it’s bad or anything, quite the opposite, in fact. The problem with the show is that there was so little hype surrounding the series and I barely even knew it had begun to air. The audience clearly wasn’t there, which is the case when it comes to shows that are outside the box. It’s a shame that clever, smart, and fun shows tend to not go far but at least this got to live out one season and enjoy its time on our screens.

Buy it! If you’re a fan of James Gunn’s hilariously fantastic horror flick, Slither, you’ll absolutely enjoy what’s in store for you with BrainDead.
