A review by Josh Rose

When Jeff Lemire takes on a project, I pay attention. When Lewis LaRosa takes on a project with Lemire, I find myself suddenly broke.

Bloodshot Salvation #1 tells the story of Bloodshot and his family in the present and future. In the future, Magic does her best to protect her daughter from those who hunt her. In the present, Magic is harassed by her estranged father who wants her to come back.

Lemire sets up an incredible mystery. He opens Bloodshot Salvation #1 in the near future with Bloodshot’s daughter being chased by this paramilitary group. Just when we think Jessie is in trouble, Magic shows up and saves her. And we wonder what happened to Bloodshot and who this group is. From what I’ve seen so far, Lemire is going to be playing with plenty of themes affecting America and the world, from family to populism and racism.

LaRosa’s art is amazing. His “camera angles” and the way he uses perspective is incredible as he creates a sense of realism in his art. His panel layout in Bloodshot Salvation #1 is fun to look at as they overlap each other, but are still easy to follow and understand. Mico Suayan’s art is just fantastic! My favorite thing about Suayan’s art has to be the fight sequence at the beginning between Jessie and this paramilitary group trying to capture her, and the fires at the end. The fight is quick and brutal, but it flows so smoothly.

The Verdict
Buy it – Bloodshot Salvation #1 is a great jumping on point for new readers. Its going to be an interesting adventure as we find out what happens to Bloodshot and his family in the future. The art is beautiful to look at and with plenty of action that you’d expect in a Bloodshot comic.
