Storm #1 cover Ororo Munroe balances it all —the Avengers, politics, an incredible wardrobe and ludicrously big huge hair— in Storm #1.

With Krakoa gone and her role as the Regent of Arakko nullified, Ororo Munroe has fallen into a new gig as one of the Avengers and is even getting into politics, but a goddess like herself still struggles to find purpose in a world that once again hates and fears her. When a chance opportunity for some good press in the face of grave tragedy comes along, however, Ororo has to decide if she’d rather do the right thing or stay silent for clout.

As with every new X-Men title launching out of “From the Ashes,” I read Storm #1 wondering what it would be “about,” beyond the obvious setup presented. Dazzler, for example, uses mutant celebrity as a way of discussing the never ending culture war, and it seems Storm will take a similar approach as writer Murewa Ayodele’s way of exploring politics and the act of politicking. The Storm we see here is leveraging her notability as a superhero as a way into policy making, and she quickly finds out the hard way that doing the “right” thing doesn’t necessarily make you popular or beloved. That’s a compelling hook for a series.

The creative team of Storm is incredibly solid, with writer Ayodele —who I believe to be the first person of African origin writing an ongoing series with the character— having a reverence for the subject that is entirely expected. Storm is one of the coolest characters in Marvel’s roster, yet hasn’t been given a spotlight like this as often as you might assume she has. There’s a lot to explore with her. But Ayodele is not alone; Lucas Werneck’s art is fantastic, as it usually is. Each scene is stunningly gorgeous, lush, and full of detail. Storm #1 is worth the price of admission alone just on the visuals, but the entire package is exceedingly quality and worth checking out.
