Today is the both an exciting day and a sad day for me. Rogue & Gambit #5 is out. While I am excited to see how Kelly Thompson wraps up this wonderful story, I am sad to see the series come to an end. For a reader who has been a fan of both characters, Rogue & Gambit has felt like a throwback to the time when the X-Men ruled the world, and Rogue and Gambit were America’s hottest couple.

Rogue & Gambit #5 picks up right where number four left us. The couple are fighting to get their memories back from their various doppelgangers. With each win, the couple gets a memory back–not always a good one.

Thompson wraps up the series beautifully. The focus is completely on Rogue and Gambit, and, other than their clones and a few characters near the end, no one else appears. Once again, the dialogue between the characters is spot on. Rogue and Gambit have a complicated history, and, as with most couples, they have had their fair share of ups and downs. They know how to build each other up, and they know where to hit the hardest to get a reaction. Thompson builds off of this tension with her misty eye-inducing words.

Perez continues to impress with his art in this series. The bright colors and the strong inklines draw you in. The unique panels layouts and use of movement keep the reader engaged from page one.

Verdict: Buy it.

If you have not read the series yet, go back and find the first four issues and grab them as well. Rogue & Gambit #5 takes a wonderful story and wraps it up in a nice little bow. The last two pages should be inspiration for any couple that just feels like they can never get things right. My only request is that sales warrant the series getting picked up as an ongoing–with Thompson writing it of course!
