These are the adventures of the Inhuman’s loyal hound, Lockjaw. His continuing mission: To seek out new bones and shoes to chew on. To boldly go where no dog has gone before! Cue music. But in all seriousness, Lockjaw #1 is a story about a giant dog with teleportation powers, and along for the ride is former hero, and recently broken hearted Demolition Man, or D-man.

I had to laugh. The opening pages has a bit of dialogue that made me think someone was talking about Lockjaw, until I realized that Medusa was talking to Black Bolt. And then there are talking hamsters in flying hamster balls attacking D-man and Lockjaw. This is crazy funny with a healthy dose of sober reality thrown in from D-man’s personal life. The crazy old lady that is D-man’s neighbor (or something) says really offensive stuff, but she really means well. Just a sweet old lady stuck in her ways. Its been a while since I laughed out loud while reading. But among all the crazy antics, I suspect that this will be a good adventure for D-man.

Carlos Villa does a great job pencilling a giant bulldog being very active, but its Chris O’Halloran’s colours that really steal the show. O’Halloran colours are bright for the main story, and fade when D-man shares some of his flashbacks. The blues he uses for Lockjaw’s teleportation powers really pop and draw your eyes every time. Even the yellows for the flying hamster-ball explosions pop!

The Verdict:
Buy It! Lockjaw #1 is a refreshingly funny story that I definitely needed to read. You don’t need to know anything about the Inhumans or D-man in order to enjoy this story about Marvel’s larger than life doggo.
