Staff Picks of the Week – April 14th, 2017

It is Friday, gang! It is time for the Staff Picks of the Week! Each week a select few of our staff share with you what has been keeping them entertained. But you know how it goes, before we get to the picks, I share with you, our very attractive readers, what has been going on at Rogues Portal this week! Amelia’s Pick of the Week -My staff pick of the week is Sailor Moon R, the movie! I recently watched all the classic anime for the latest episode of The Missfits podcast. That’s two hundred episodes! But I didn’t stop there! No, no, no! My time has no value to me whatsoever, so I watched the movies too! Surprisingly, I ended up loving Sailor Moon R. Battling against a flower based monster that wants to drain the Earth of energy (because ain’t that always the way in Sailor Moon?), R is an hour long romp through friendship. I mean, yes, all of Sailor Moon is based on the friendship of the Sailor Scouts, but there’s just something really touching about R as each one thinks back to their first meeting with Sailor Moon and what a good friend she is, despite her other shortcomings. Plus, this is the last entry with all of the original voice cast, as Sailor Moon, Mercury, and Venus are replaced in the English dubs starting in Sailor Moon S. So in the name of the Moon, watch Sailor Moon R!

Greg’s Pick of the Week –  The Weapon X program is as part of the Marvel Universe as any major character or organization. It has been responsible for creating some of the most vicious character throughout the universe. Weapon X #1 lets us know that everyone was wrong when they assume the organization has been disbanded. Not only are they still around but they are back to trying to create a team that shows no mercy. We find out that the program is collecting some of their greatest projects and they are trying to bring Wolverine in. In addition, we find out what happened to Lady Deathstrike after the events of X-men Prime, while the Weapon X program tips their hands a bit of their future plans. It’s a good start for the series and should keep people guessing as to what is coming next.

Billy’s Pick of the Week – The Night Before Fast & Furious is a bedtime story written by Demi Adejuyigbe with illustrations by Heather Christianson. The story summarizes the entire Fast and the Furious franchise as a child-friendly rhyming tale with plenty of heart. It’s a fun take that celebrates the best aspects of the franchise, spotlighting the emphasis on friendship and the constant push towards bigger, faster, and furiouser storytelling. It doesn’t hurt that the story uses as many synonyms for both “fast” and “furious” than you can think of. Published on Medium and available to read for free, the bedtime story may not be the only way you should introduce your four year old child to the story of Fast and the Furious, but it’s certainly the only one I recommend.”

Michael’s Pick of the Week – My staff pick of the week is the new season of Mystery Science Theater 3000. After almost 20 years off the air, the show is coming back thanks to Netflix, a basically successful Kickstarter and the passion of everyone involved with the original series or those who have been influenced by it. The format remains the same: a man and his robot friends are forced to watch awful movies by a mad scientist, making fun of them for our benefit the entire time. There couldn’t be a more relatable plot. I’m excited and a little astonished that there are now 14 new episodes of MST3K that I haven’t seen yet and I hope that, like me, you’ll be spending your weekend working your way through them.

David’s Pick of the Week – My pick of the week is Deadpool vs The Punisher #1. Two of my favorite characters head to head in the same book! I was nervous when I first saw the preview for it because I was afraid the characterization for at least one of them would be a bit off. I am very happy to say that both characters are on point and this first issue is damn good! Castle is hunting down The Bank, a less than savory guy that has criminal ties all over the world. It just so happens that Deadpool does jobs for The Bank and thinks he is an OK guy. Tragedy strikes, leaving Wilson and Castle to guess who is behind the evil doings. But the pair don’t like each other and aren’t afraid to show it. The last page in the book is best! If you are a Punisher or Deadpool fan, then this book is a must have!
