I’m terribly excited for the new 13 Reasons Why miniseries coming to Netflix on March 31. The book has been one of my favorite book for a very long time in YA literature and this book as a mini-series makes my heart soar. I have compiled thirteen reasons why you should watch 13 Reasons Why in March. Most of them are good reasons, most of them are just because you should take my word for it. ?
- The new show on Netflix, 13 Reasons Why, is based off a book by Jay Asher. Jay is one of the great writers of YA lit. Another title he helms is The Future of Us, co-written with Carolyn Mackler. The Future of Us is about two teenage best friends who find Facebook before Facebook is invented and can change their destinies from it.
- 13 Reasons Why focus on Clay Jensen, a boy who receives a mysterious package in the mail from our main character Hannah Baker, a girl who recently committed suicide. Hannah has sent these tapes to explain the people who have lead her to her ultimate decision.
- It’s an intense book, but beautiful and something that everyone should read at least once in their lifetime. Also, they brought but that coolness and tragedy of the cassette tape player and tapes in general? (Yes, this is a reason why.)
- 13 Reasons Why was a New York Times best seller in July 2011 and was published under the YA imprint of Penguin Books called RazorBill.
- 13 Reasons Why will be written by Brian Yorkey. I, personally, am freaking out about this. Yorkey has written one of the best musicals ever called, Next To Normal.
- He will also be show running it with Diana Son, who is known for her work on Southland, Blue Bloods, Law & Order: CI and American Crime.
- The mini series will be directed by Tom McCarthy. He just won an Oscar for the movie Spotlight, so I’m pretty sure that’s super dope to have him here.
- It’s a mini-series, meaning 13 episodes, which is basically the perfect amount of episodes. It also goes with the title so you will get Hannah’s story from beginning to end.
- The 10th Anniversary Edition of the book, just came out about a month ago, so what better time to have this on-screen.
- Selena Gomez serves as one of the executive producers of the miniseries. She was originally cast as Hannah Baker, but Hannah will be played by Katherine Langford (who looks PERFECT for the role).
- Let’s talk about the rest of this cast. Clay is being played by Dylan Minnette, Alisha Boe is Jessica, Kate Walsh is playing Mrs. Baker, Miles Heizer is playing Alex and there’s SO much more goodness that round out awesome that is this case. I have all the faith that they’ll do this miniseries proud.
- The book served as a great piece about mental health and suicide prevention. I have no doubt that the series will do justice to do and treat it with the respect it deserves.
- You’ll totally want to hear each of the 13 Reasons Why. It’s a building mystery and something that really shakes you to your core, but it’s something that needs to be talked about. Each event that happened from when it happened to her final days is very important.
