Partnering with Audible (an audiobook/drama hosting site), Ubisoft is expanding the Assassin’s Creed universe once more by entering the world of audio dramas. Titled Assassin’s Creed Gold, the audio drama will be released exclusively on Audible on February 27th, 2020.
With multiple games, comics, novels, a movie, and board games, it makes sense that Ubisoft would finally take the leap towards an audio adventure. Unlike an audiobook, an audio drama involves multiple voice actors performing a scripted story over a series of episodes.
Spanning eight episodes, Assassin’s Creed Gold will follow the usual format of Assassin’s Creed storytelling, taking place in both modern and historical times. Through assassin Aliyah Kahn, we will visit ancestor Omar Khalid in the 1600s, specifically 1696, through the events of the Great Recoinage. Audible’s website gives us a better idea of what to expect from the audio drama:
Assassin’s Creed: Gold follows Aliyah Kahn, a card shark and hustler, who’s been dealt a rough hand in life. Surviving through her smarts and street scams, Aliyah struggles to get by until she loses big time to a mysterious older man, Gavin Banks. Her only option to repay Banks is to become an Assassin. During her training, Banks tells Aliyah of the centuries-old battle between the Assassins and Templars, imploring her to help him decode a secret message inscribed on an illegal form of currency during the Great Recoinage of 1696.
For those who aren’t familiar with this historical event, the Great Recoinage of 1696 was an endeavor set out in England by King William III. The value of silver coinage had been rapidly declining due to being clipped with counterfeits starting to saturate the economy. Over in Paris and Amsterdam, the value of silver had risen, creating a disparity in the market for people to take advantage. The Great Recoinage was an attempt to replace all the clipped coins, though it ended up failing merely a few years later. Historical figures during this time (and possible character cameos in the audio drama) included Sir Isaac Newton, John Locke, and Tsar Peter the Great.
Assassin’s Creed Gold will be penned by Assassin’s Creed comics alumni Anthony Del Col. Joining the audio drama cast will be Riz Ahmed (Rogue One), Anthony Head (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Danny Wallace (Assassin’s Creed Syndicate), and Tamara Lawrence (No Offence).
