“That’s Speed meets Sister Act meets Airwolf!”
Words spoken by the charismatic good cop/bad cop Roy describing how his partner Mac was injured in an act of heroism to save a bus load of hot nuns from a flag burning masked terrorist. I’m sorry, what? Yup! Issue 2 of The Fix has hit the stands! Many comics try to start out with a bang to catch new readers and then let up a little in the second story to focus a little on plot, maybe developing some characters, but The Fix keeps the pedal to the metal and doesn’t let up, and I love it!
The issue begins with Mac and Roy having a fun filled day together. They go to the zoo, take a trip to an amusement park, take in a LA Clippers game, visit Jane Mansfield’s grave and even hit up one of my favorite fast food joints out west, In N Out Burger. So how do our heroes (yes, I called them heroes) finish their day? By shooting Mac of course! Meanwhile, Roy has come up with a humorous but very diabolical way to get assigned to a case that he desperately wants. These guys don’t let anything get in their way of what they desire, which makes me even more curious to what they screwed up to get them into the predicament they are in.
The issue doesn’t slow down at all, we get a little more insight into how psychotic their criminal boss, Josh really is. Internal Affairs is more involved then originally appeared to be and the story continues to build from there. Spencer is amazing again in this issue. He is building these characters without losing any momentum of the story telling. They are all bad and corrupt cops, but you can’t help but like and cheer for them.
Lieber continues with his great visuals. How many “F” words can you fit into the background of one panel? Lieber shows you! The visual humor mixes with the textual and, combined, makes the story fit together so well.
The Verdict:
BUY IT!!!! It is only May, but this book is already in my top 3 for the year. I like this comic so much that when I picked up issue 2 today, I saw that the second printing for issue 1 was out as well. I almost picked it up because the cover was different from the first print. In fact, I most likely will go back for it. The story is so well written and oozes noir. Spencer and Lieber are a dynamic team and I look forward to what’s next. I like a good crime story and if you do too, then I strongly suggest you pick up both issues!
