When Hammer Film Productions stopped producing films in 1979 they didn’t just die, they transitioned.
The first thing that comes to mind when people think “Hammer” is usually “Horror”. But Hammer Films wasn’t always the home of horror at all.
The 1960s were the heyday for horror when it comes to Hammer Film Productions. They practically became a household name, at home in Britain and abroad, by breathing new life into a stagnating genre.
Following the huge success of The Curse of Frankenstein Hammer went into production on an adaptation of Dracula. And they delivered.
Hammer took horror movies from the shadows of black and white to a place of lush backgrounds and stark pops of colour. They basically created Gothic horror.
