With 18 issues left, the end is just on the horizon. Volume six functions as a bit of a soft reboot, reformatting the Squad into a freelance, mercenary team-for-hire. But everything else I’ve come to love about Suicide Squad remains the same: Concise, tightly-plotted political thrillers with fun character moments.
The Janus Directive crossover from the previous volume is easily my least favorite part of Suicide Squad so far. Thankfully, Suicide Squad #31-#39 is a return to form for the series, refocusing itself on what matters most: The members that make up the Squad.
The Squad’s existence is revealed, Waller takes her power game to the next level, and Oracle gets her first “appearance” in Suicide Squad #23. What else could possibly happen for our band of misfit metahumans?
Three crimes. Three Jokers. Which one is the real Joker? Or are they all somehow the real Joker? That’s the question this comic poses.
Hope Larson has some pretty big shoes to fill, but if this first arc is any indication, she’s perfectly equipped to handle the monumental challenge!
