In Star Wars: Thrawn #2, we join the now Lieutenant Thrawn and Ensign Eli Vanto on mission to capture smugglers and help any distressed vessels…especially those that serve the Empire’s interest. Their ship, the Blood Crow, comes across a derelict ship that is full of valuable gas, which Thrawn is put in charge of extracting. But success isn’t as easy as it seems as Thrawn has to outsmart multiple enemies…both outside and inside of the Imperial Navy.

This second part of the Thrawn adaptation picks up right where the last one left off in achieving excellence as having a life as its own while still staying true to the source. While not quite as fast-paced as the previous issue in my mind, Star Wars: Thrawn #2 is still nonetheless an impressive display of Thrawn’s intellectual prowess. Also, I don’t quite want to use the words “filler material,” but this felt like more of a transition period between getting to know Thrawn and the building tension between Thrawn and the elite class within the Empire. This issue does a good job of keeping you interested in the characters and their story, while setting up for a bigger clash down the road.

And again, I loved the artwork in this book. The ship design is detailed but not invasive; the space scenes are haunting yet gorgeous; and I love the way the characters are drawn with a classic feel and the use of crisscrossing lines that add more depth to their facial expressions. Another part about the art that I love is the panel layout; no two pages are the same, and that keeps the story moving.

Verdict: Buy it.

You’ll especially want to get Star Wars: Thrawn #2 to get your Thrawn fix after Star Wars: Rebels has concluded. Everyone involved on the team in putting this together has created a product that Star Wars fans would be proud to have in their collection.
