It is no secret that the DCEU is a bit of a mess right now. Complaints of movies like Man of Steel, Justice League and more recently the upcoming TV show Titans being too dark have been a common complaint from fans. So, when the Shazam movie was announced, many wondered what versions of the hero we would get. This weekend at SDCC fans got their answer, and it was much lighter than people expected.
Reaction:
While I have been an avid comic book reader for many years, the character of Shazam has never interested me that much. As far as the movie, I knew it was coming. I had been keeping up with some of the casting news. All that said, after seeing this trailer, I am all in.
The trailer is just plain fun. The trailer starts with the ominous idea that Billy has run away or been kicked out of every foster home before that quickly changes. Instead, it shifts to a bit of a friendship and ribbing that good friends in school will give each other. Even the way that Billy reacts when he is first given the power harps on the idea of the how light this movie is going to be, as he laughs about just having to say Shazam! for his powers to activate.
I have heard of the movie being described as Big meets Superheroes. I could not agree more. Zachary Levi is able to play the role of a kid in a Superhero body perfectly. From his actions to the choice of words, everything shows that he is indeed a kid. It is part of what makes the trailer feel so light.
After seeing the trailer, I am much more excited for Shazam than I am for Aquaman.
