Hold on for this one guys, it’s therapy time!
In Scarlet Witch #8, Wanda is back in New York and she’s seeing a therapist! This is a great break for Wanda who, in previous issues, have been traveling around the country in order to figure out why witchcraft is broken. This issue focuses on Wanda’s issues only. In “Witches’ Road” (#3 + #4), Wanda came face to face with a woman who had the same name as her, but as well as a last name. Wanda came face to face with her mother, Natalya Maximoff, also known as The Scarlet Witch.
If you know any of the comic history of Scarlet Witch, there are a couple of different origin stories. There are two however that remain absolutely stable. She is either the daughter of a romanian woman and Magneto (X-Men, mutant, you may know him) or a genetically modified woman from a mad scientist known as High Evolutionary. These two stories seems to be the most consistent for Scarlet Witch and her brother Quicksilver, but in this issue, it makes a very important appearance when talking about her mother. James Robinson really takes Scarlet Witch’s story to heart in this issue and I have to give him major props for it. It not only gives you that comic history that you know Wanda from, but it also gives you the incidents from House of M, Avengers Disassembled and Children’s Crusade. He addresses the issues between Scarlet Witch and her ex-husband Vision and her two kids Wiccan and Speed, which are really important parts of Wanda’s life. It’s such a great issue to kinda go back and rewind the clock on Wanda’s comic book history that people might want to know and/or never heard of.
Another great thing about this issue is Tula Lotay’s art. Her art has a very soft and sophisticated touch to it, almost like a painting that needs to be in a museum. It makes you want to turn the page and study every bit of work that she put into creating this issue. That paired with her colors are absolutely stunning, she keeps the issue in this warm light, especially when you’re in the therapist’s office. It’s always incredible to see these different artist work with the costume of Scarlet Witch. Tula’s design of her mother in the original outfit with a gypsy flare as got to be my favorite thing ever.
Verdict:
Buy It! This seems like Scarlet Witch is shifting into another direction with her going to Romana to find out the answers to her parentage and upbringing. Scarlet Witch has always been a bit of a mystery, not only to reader, but to herself. Her story always carries itself into bits and pieces throughout comic history, but finally hearing about her heritage and her magic will hopefully be worth the path it’s going in.
