What If from Marvel comics has always been a fun concept. A classic story told with just one small change that can have a major effect on the future of the Marvel universe. Or you may have a well-known character seen in a light or role that is not to be expected. With the melding of Marvel and Disney, it was just a matter of time before the two came together in the form of crossover comics. This week that crossover comes to us in the form of the latest What If volume. What If…? Donald Duck Became Wolverine

In this mythical world, Pete-Skull has pillaged all of Duckberg, leaving the heroes without the ability to protect the townspeople. In addition, he has stolen all of Uncle Scrooge’s fortune. Thankfully there is a small group of heroes who are willing to stand up to Pete-Skull and get back the citizens’ treasures. However to be successful they need the help of one of the most ferocious heroes of all time, Donald Wolverine, but unfortunately, right now all he wants to do is nap and eat pie. So how will the heroes get him to join the fight? Well of course with a little subterfuge of course.

What If…? Donald Duck Became Wolverine is written as an all-ages book and skews much more towards the younger audience. So if you have younger kids who are just getting into comics or would enjoy reading the story to them this is the book for you. There are enough gags and references throughout that long-time Marvel fans will find plenty to grab onto. And even written with a younger audience in mind the story is engaging and has a rewarding end to it.

The art here really steals the show. Bright colors throughout the book keep the art engaging and popping out at you. The panels are deep and detailed, giving plenty to take in as you linger on the page. The redesigns are amazing, they represent the classic looks of the Disney characters while adding the touches to them that represent the Marvel characters they are representing. One splash page in particular pays great homage, as Donald is depicted in several classic Wolverine costumes. With a focus that skews more towards the younger audience the panel layouts are simple and easy to follow with lettering that does not consume the entire panel.

What If…? Donald Duck Became Wolverine is the crossover one-shot that you did not know that you needed. A well-developed story that moves at a quick pace while still feeling fully formed, this comic can be enjoyed as a family or can be given to a child for them to enjoy on their own.
