Mega Man is one of mine and my partners favourite 8-bit video games which came out in 1987 on the Nintendo Entertainment system. The game was renowned at the time for having tight controls and also giving you the ability to choose which levels you wanted to tackle first. It’s considered one of the most renowned games of all time!! My partner and I have been playing it non-stop recently so you can imagine our excitement when we spotted the Mystery Mini’s in London’s Forbidden Planet.
Game Overview
In the original series, Mega Man is actually an android called Rock (Mega Man is actually known as Rock Man in Japan) and is created as lab assistant by scientist Dr. Light with the help of Dr Wily. Because Dr. Wily reprograms all of Dr. Light robots, Rock is then converted into a battle robot who is programmed to defend the world from Wily’s robotic threats. Then he becomes Mega Man! At the end of each level was a end level boss who upon defeating granted you there abilities to use from then on out in the game.
My favourite idea from the game is their rock-paper-scissors effect. Each enemy has it’s own kryptonite, for example Fire Man will receive more damage from Ice Man’s weapon than any other weapon Mega Man gains, so you could say there is a specific order to play the game. Each weapon you gain will affect how you play the game and which enemy to defeat next.
Mystery Mini
The mystery mini’s are created by kidrobot and there are many many characters to collect within the series. There are 14 altogether and underneath the image of each characters it tells what you’re chances are snagging one of them. The list is as follows;
- Mega Man (2/20)
- Mega Man Green suit (1/20)
- Roll, Mega Man’s sister. She’s a cleaner robot (obvs) (1/20)
- Dr. Light (1/20)
- Ice Man (2/20)
- Guts Man (1/20)
- Elec Man (2/20)
- Mega Man red suit (1/20)
- A surprise mystery mini (?/??)
- Dr. Wily (1/20)
- Cut Man (2/20)
- Fire Man (2/20)
- Bomb Man (2/20)
- Yellow Devil (?/??)
What We Wanted
I bought Dan (my partner) 4 mystery mini’s since I knew we wouldn’t find any back home in Cardiff. I remember Dan specifically saying he wanted Yellow Devil, Fire Man and Bomb Man. So, what did we get??
The Surprise Mystery Mini!
What are the chances?! Well we don’t know as there are question marks next to it’s image on the box. This was the first one we opened and I thought he was so cute!! I mean, look at his hair?! Look at those adorable little spikes. What I absolutely LOVE about these Kidrobot Mystery Mini’s is the fact you can move their arms and their heads!! You cannot do that with some mystery mini’s you get out there. Because we got the surprise Mega Man.
Fire Man
Fire Man is Dan’s favourite character for nostalgia reasons. Mega Man was Dan’s first game on the NES and the first enemy he played on the game so he was over the moon when we opened him up. Fire Man was created by Doctor Light to work as an incinerator and is able to wield flames that can reach up to 8000 degrees. Fire Man’s special weapon is the Fire Storm which means he can melt or burn anything he wants.
I love the jaunty angle to his cute little head. All the details are there, including his finer details on his back.
Guts Man
Guts Man wasn’t a particular favourite of ours but it was a nice surprise to have him. He was again another creation of Dr. Light to band together with Bomb Man for the purpose of land reclamation and construction. Guts Man’s strength his…well his strength. He is capable of lifting and transporting many heavy objects which include rocks over two tons. When you battle himhe can use his weapon which is the Super Arm to throw heavy object at his enemies.
Look at his chin! I love the fact they’ve added a slight sneer to his smile. He looks so evil and badass. It’s also worth noting that thus far none of them have any scratches or that any of them have poorly done paint jobs. I’m very impressed.
Yellow Devil
Dan really really really really really wanted Yellow Devil. The chances of getting him were slim and since we managed to get the surprise Mystery Mini there was no way in hell we were going to get Yellow Devil. WRONG!! Yellow Devil is also referred to as Yellow Demon and he’s a massive robot. He was the first combat robot created by Dr. Wily originally appearing in the first Mega Man game. He’s one of the toughest enemies to beat within the game since he has the tendency of changing forms once hit once or twice and unfortunately his only weak point is his red eye, which is a bastard to hit!
There isn’t much I can say about this little figurine except for how beautiful it is! The yellow is vibrant and these photos do not do it any justice. Again like all the figurines above it has articulation in it heads and arms so you can differ it’s poses.
And there you have it. My Mega Man mystery mini haul. Will I buy more?? No because I have the ones we wanted so there isn’t any point, however they do have Cartman and The Simpsons mystery mini which I will definitely purchase in the near future.
