Glitterbomb: The Fame Game #1 tells the story of Kaydon Klay, a high-schooler who wants nothing more than fame and fortune. However, when Kaydon’s leap to fame is jumpstarted by a national tragedy, she finds herself in quite the ethical dilemma. All of Hollywood’s big names were slaughtered at an event, and Kaydon was the last one to speak to the murderer. Not only did Kaydon babysit for Farrah (the suspect), but she also was hoping that Farrah, a once-famous actress, would help her with her own career. Now that Kaydon is being pursued by paparazzies, investigators, and the like, it seems that Farrah has done just that—though not in the way that Kaydon expected.
This first issue does a fantastic job of depicting the range of emotions that Kaydon is feeling. Through believable, well-written dialogue and plenty of emotive panels, readers experience Kaydon’s inner turmoil. Glitterbomb: The Fame Game #1 does not hesitate to raise some big philosophical questions: Is it wrong to use tragedy for one’s gain? Is anything authentic or is it all just a performance? What does one sacrifice for personal fame? These are some of the concerns that this issue explores. And, rather than coming across as preachy or clunky, the creative team skillfully weaves these overarching questions throughout the story.
If you read the previous arc of Glitterbomb, which focused on the character of Farrah, you know to expect a mix of fun, horror, and surprising twists. And I am happy to report that Glitterbomb: The Fame Game #1 delivers much of the same. As this first issue draws to a close, the paranormal mystery escalates, and there is a good dosage of gory horror. Although Hollywood is certainly full of excess, everything about Glitterbomb: The Fame Game #1 feels intentional, purposeful, and that’s what makes it such a strong read.
Verdict: Buy it! Glitterbomb: The Fame Game #1 is a compelling, unexpected blend of horror, coming-of-age, and Hollywood drama. With relatable characters and philosophical depth, this comic will appeal to a wide variety of readers. So, no excuses! Grab a copy of Glitterbomb: The Fame Game #1, and, while you’re at it, pick up the previous arc as well. You won’t regret it.
