Euthanauts #1 introduces us to two woman who have unique relationships with death. Thalia Rosewood is obsessed with death. Mercy Wolfe is near death due to a brain tumor. When these two happen to meet in a restaurant bathroom, Thalia gets pulled into a world that she didn’t expect but perhaps always wanted.

I read a lot of sci-fi and fantasy, and, when done well, I don’t mind if it’s loosely held together by a few ideas, leaving a lot more questions than answers. I know this is only issue #1, but I am fairly certain that that’s going to be the case here. Euthanauts #1 is interested in the tether between this world and the next, and what happens if one chooses to take themselves out of this world (perhaps with a companion along for the ride as well).

The writing is equal parts punchy, believable dialogue and thoughtful, poetic musing. As one might imagine with a series about euthanasia, there is a lot of philosophical inquiry here, and personally I think that’s what the best sci-fi has. The art is a beautiful pairing of realism and surrealism. The linework is super detailed, and the bits of glowing yellow color throughout really add to that otherworldly flair.

Verdict: Buy it.

If you’re someone that always questions the logistics of how things work in a story, then Euthanauts #1 is not for you. But if you’re someone looking for a lyrical dream-like narrative with a solid depth, then I highly recommend picking up a copy.
