EGLX 2019 (Enthusiast Gaming Live Expo) took place on the weekend of October 18-20 in the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. This year, the growing gamer expo moved from the South building to the larger North building to accommodate more demos, more stages, and more fun!
Games on Display
Of course, the reason fans come to EGLX is to see games, from big-name publishers and developers to small indie studios. Nintendo had lines of eager fans completely surrounding their exhibits for Zelda: Link’s Awakening and Luigi’s Mansion 3. Xbox had several Xbox One consoles on site with about a dozen games available to play, mainly older games like Borderlands 2, Fallout 4, Sea of Thieves, and Deadrising. They also had a throne made out of Xbox game cases for photo ops, as well as a chance to win an Xbox Game Pass (I didn’t win, but I looked pretty boss on the throne).
There were lots of gaming stations. Some were single-game setups for Minecraft or Apex Legends, others were just banks of computers and consoles for gamers to enjoy. I saw one guy playing a fighting game using a rather unique keyboard. There seemed to be fewer indie studios in attendance this year, but enough interesting games for us to do a separate article (look for that coming soon).
Events
You can wander around the EGLX floor, trying out games and chatting with developers, or you can sit for a spell, watching one of the show stages or an interesting panel. This year’s lineup included a podcast recording of Cosplay Again, demos of Watch Dogs: Legion, panels about cosplay and game development, as well as meet & greets with Bruce Greene (Funhaus), Kris Wilson (Cyanide & Happiness), and Kinda Funny.
Luminosity, makers of Apex Legends, had a big presence at the con this year. They had a booth with several setups for fans to play and a Can You Beat Luminosity challenge on the main stage, where fans had a chance to try to best the developers at their own game.
If you can get to Toronto in mid-October, EGLX is a fun event! A bit more casual than the big shows like PAX or GamesCon, EGLX is a great place to check out AAA and indie games alike, as well as get some Christmas shopping done in Creative Corner. With retro arcade decks, gaming stations, a cosplay lounge, and gaming tournaments, there’s something interesting around every corner.
