A teaser trailer for Disney’s upcoming film Moana was released just last night during the Tony Awards broadcast.
Moana is about a young girl setting sail in the ancient South Pacific world of Oceania as she searches for a lost island with her sidekick Maui. The trailer features Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, and newcomer Auli’i Cravalho, who will be playing the title character. It also featured music by Hamilton star Lin-Manuel Miranda, Samoan singer/songwriter Opetaia Foa’i, and composer Mark Mancina.
Disney announced in 2014 that Moana would be the studio’s 56th animated film, and the first to feature a Pacific Islander princess. Moana is voiced by Auli’i Cravalho, a Native Hawaiian teen, and Maui by Dwayne Johnson, who is half Samoan.
Cravalho has said about her character:
“Moana is such an amazing character. She’s brave, she is so empowered, she knows what she wants and she’s not afraid to get it.”
Johnson has said:
“Samoa is in my blood… And to tell a story inspired by the South Pacific is truly a great honor.”
Moana is set to hit theatres this November 23. Check out the teaser trailer below!
